Methamphetamine in Vigo County

Very recently, a meeting was held amongst the Terre Haute Police Department and several representatives from local pharmacies to combat the pseudoephedrine sales, noting its relation in the production of methamphetamine. Vigo County has one of the highest numbers of meth labs in the state.

The ONLY ingredient meth cookers cannot substitute is Pseudoephedrine (the active ingredient in Sudafed).

By July 1, 2010, the police department hopes to have every pharmacy in Vigo County on board with selling Sudafed as a prescription-only medication. Several pharmacies in the area have already agreed to cooperate.

This plan has already taken off in other areas of the United States. Oregon, for example, had reported 473 meth labs in 2003.

After limiting the sales of pseudoephedrine and putting these products behind the counter, the number of meth labs dropped to 192.

After requiring a prescription for all pseudoephedrine products, 18 labs were reported.

Vigo County officials are hoping to have similar results and for other counties to follow in their footsteps.

This comment is more for the whole blog rather than this post, but I just wanna say I really like what you guys are doing here with all of this. Most information on drugs is incredibly one-sided and full of lies that seem to be aimed at "the greater good". So I just wanna give credit where it's due and commend you for your accuracy. That being said, I would totally love to get into a debate about a lot of these viewpoints, but that's all opinion based. You guys are definitely solid as it pertains to facts.

Thank you! Feel free to email us at rseymour@purdue.edu and bwellman@purdue.edu if you want to voice some opinions. There's a lot of hot debate surrounding the political side of drug use, and as pharmacists-in-training we will be the face of those future laws and regulations. So we have some opinions of our own!!
